[Solution]: Unable to run PDF-XChange Viewer on wine in 64 bit Linux operating systems.

As far as I know running PDF-XChange viewer using wine on Linux is the only possible way to annotate PDF documents in Linux. So I installed wine as usual on my 64-bit Ubuntu and installed PDF-XChange Viewer. However, I noticed whenever I try to use search or save the annotations, it crashed. After a lot of searching I found that PDF-XChange Viewer doesn't run well on 64-bit wine. So I decided to run wine in 32-bit mode. I cleaned up my $WINEPREFIX (~/.wine/) and set $WINEARCH to win32 and ran winecfg, so that wine is configured to run in 32-bit mode. However, even this didn't solve the problem. These are the steps I followed:
rm -rf ~/.wine (or) mv ~/.wine ~/.wine_old
WINEARCH = win32
winecfg
The solution seems to be installing 32-bit wine directly instead of configuring it to run in 32-bit mode as above. For this, purge the wine completely from the system and follow these steps:

 1. Clean up the wine config or backup as above:
rm -rf ~/.wine (or) mv ~/.wine ~/.wine_old
2. Add the oficial wine PPA to your sources:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa -y && sudo apt-get update
3. Install the 32 bit version of wine.
sudo apt-get install wine1.8:i386
Hope this helps you in successfully running PDF-XChange Viewer on 64-bit Linux OS as it did in my case! Happy annotating PDFs in Linux :)

Let me know your comments in the comments section!

PS1: If you are still having the problem, I suggest that you open ~/.wine/*.reg files and ensure that arch=win32 is not commented and also ensure other things that indicate wine is running in 32 bit mode. I'm sorry if this too didn't help you.

Update: If saving file causes PDF-XChange Viewer to crash, there is a workaround - try "Save as" and keep alternating between two files.

PS2: I'm sorry for not providing enough details as I have very less time to blog!

  1. Dear SHSS Vidyasagar,
    Thanks for your post! It solved my problem! I've made a wine clean install on lubuntu 15.04, with wine 1.7:i386 and pdf x change viewer 2.5.313.1 (exe file), and it's working like a charm!
    Now, for me, it's only missing, using pdfxchange to save notes over the network using wine.
    Thanks once again!

  2. try foxit reader. I don't like the cluttered interface, but at least it doesn't crash under wine/linuxmint 17 (32 AND 64 bit).

    BTW your fix didn't work for me; moreover, it totally screwed up my wine installation, destroyed all my wine programs, so I had tgo start over and reload everything from scratch.

  3. This solution was recommended on WINEHQ bug site, but I came here just to have a look and share this information:

    1) It seems the problem is now totally gone with PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.315.0 (portable version) and wine 1.7.31 (on Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit)
    2) Alternatively, the new PDF-XChange Editor doesn't create such problems, but some features like rich text formatting in comments, etc. are missing there (that's why I don't prefer it)
    3) Another alternative might be Foxit Reader, but it has even worse drawbacks (at least for some) such as lack of support for most non-ASCII characters in annotations, etc.

  4. This workaround, slightly simpler than your last suggestion, works for me to avoid PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5 (build 208) under Wine 1.6.2 on Ubuntu 15.10 64bit from crashing whenever I try to save:

    Open PDF-Xchange with the file you want. Close the file. Now re-open it within PDF-Xchange viewer. It will not crash now when you make changes and save.
